NORTHAMPTON — There wasn’t much black about Black Friday in Northampton, with people shopping under giant artificial snowflakes before going out in the snow-filled streets. Although synonymous with deals on the day after Thanksgiving, “Black Friday” originated in Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive traffic that would occur on that day. Later, it indicated the turning point for many merchants who lost money from January through November and only operated in the black after Thanksgiving.
